StudioWavePro’s Distortion is four effects in one. Overdrive is the gentle one: tube-style saturation that adds warmth and density before it adds dirt. Distortion is the classic edgy clipping of a cranked amp. Fuzz hard-clips toward a square wave for the aggressive, broken texture of 60s fuzz pedals. Lo-fi takes a different route entirely — it crushes the bit depth, quantizing the audio into coarse steps for that crunchy vintage-sampler sound.

Two sliders shape any of them: Drive (0.1–10) sets how hard the signal hits the effect, and Mix blends the processed sound against the clean original — the secret to usable distortion, since 100% wet is rarely what records actually do. Everything previews live, and the processing runs with 4× oversampling to keep digital aliasing artifacts down at high drive.

Tips

The parallel-distortion trick: heavy drive but Mix around 25–40% adds weight and excitement while the clean signal keeps the definition. This is how records use distortion far more often than full-wet.
Overdrive at low drive (1–3) works as a subtle saturator/exciter — it just makes things sound a little louder and richer.
Lo-fi’s drive controls the bit depth: low drive only roughens the quiet details; max drive quantizes hard enough to add audible gravel everywhere.
Distortion generates new high frequencies. If the result is too fizzy, follow it with the Low Pass Filter around 6–8 kHz — that’s what guitar cabinets do naturally.
Distorted output can be hotter than the input; run Normalize after applying if the result clips or feels uneven next to other tracks.

What’s the difference between overdrive, distortion, and fuzz?: It’s the shape of the clipping. Overdrive rounds the waveform gently (tube warmth, touch-sensitive). Distortion clips harder and adds edge across the spectrum. Fuzz clips brutally toward a square wave — buzzy, compressed, aggressive. Try the same Drive setting on each and the differences are obvious in seconds.
What does the Lo-fi mode do?: It reduces the effective bit depth — audio gets quantized into coarse steps, from subtle grit at low drive down to roughly 2-bit crunch at maximum. That is the texture of vintage samplers and early digital gear, and it behaves differently from the three analog-style clipping modes.
How do I add distortion without losing clarity?: Use the Mix control: keep the drive high for character but blend at 25–50% so the clean signal carries the detail. This "parallel distortion" approach is the standard studio technique for drums, bass and vocals.
Why does the distorted version sound louder than the original?: Clipping raises the average level by flattening peaks — the waveform gets denser even when the peak height stays the same. If the output feels too hot or actually clips, apply Normalize afterwards to bring it to a safe level.
How do I make a voice sound like a megaphone or old radio?: Distortion character with Drive around 4–6 and Mix at 70%+, then add the High Pass Filter at ~300 Hz and the Low Pass at ~3 kHz. The clipping supplies the grit; the filters supply the small-speaker bandwidth.
