StudioWavePro’s Tempo Detector estimates the BPM (beats per minute) of any music track. Drop in an MP3 or any audio file and the tool analyzes the rhythmic energy, then returns the most probable tempo along with two alternates. Detection takes a couple of seconds — no signup, no waiting in line.

Under the hood it uses onset-based autocorrelation in the low-frequency band, which is the same family of techniques used by DJ software and music libraries. It works best on tracks with a clear, consistent beat — pop, rock, electronic, hip-hop. Spoken word, ambient drone, and rubato classical pieces may give low-confidence or no result, which the tool will tell you directly.

Tips

If the detected BPM seems off by exactly half (or double), check the alternates — songs with strong off-beat emphasis sometimes get reported at half-time.
Confidence below 30% usually means the track lacks a steady beat (ambient, classical, spoken). Trust the result more when confidence is above 50%.
For long mixes or playlists, trim down to a single song before running detection — the detector estimates one tempo per file.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the BPM detection?: For modern music with a clear, consistent beat, detection is usually within 1 BPM of the true value. For songs with tempo changes, syncopation, or live-played beats, expect occasional half- or double-time errors — that’s why the tool always shows alternate candidates.
Why does it sometimes report 70 BPM when the song feels like 140?: That’s the classic half-time vs double-time ambiguity. The algorithm finds rhythmic periodicity but can’t always tell whether the kick is on every beat or every other beat. Check the "Other candidates" list — if 140 is the second guess, that’s probably the real tempo.
Does it work on all music styles?: Best on genres with a strong, regular beat: pop, EDM, hip-hop, rock, funk, drum & bass. Less reliable on classical, ambient, jazz with heavy swing, or any music with a "rubato" feel where the tempo drifts intentionally.
Can I detect the BPM of a podcast or speech?: No — there’s no beat to detect. The tool will return a low-confidence result or no result on spoken-word content.
How long does detection take?: For a typical 3-5 minute song, results appear in 1-2 seconds. Longer files (full DJ mixes or albums) take proportionally longer but rarely more than 10 seconds.
Can I detect BPM in real time from a microphone?: Not yet — the current tool analyzes audio files only. Real-time tap-tempo and microphone BPM detection are on the roadmap.
What if the song has tempo changes throughout?: The tool reports a single average BPM. For songs with multiple distinct sections at different tempos, trim each section separately and detect them individually.
